Toy of the Week:
Bobo Superhero Capes |
 |
May 14, 2007
Kids
can create their own personalized superhero characters with Brooklyn,
N.Y.-based Bobo's generic capes in designs like Red Bolt, Blue Star or
Pink Star.
The hand-stitched
capes can be used on dry land, at the beach or even in the bath since
they are lined with a soft terry cloth that lets them double as bath
towels. Capes ($50) are available in sizes small (1-2 years), medium
(2-4 years) and large (4-6 years). www.bobobrooklyn.com

T-shirts for toddlers
By Trine Tsouderos
Tribune staff reporter
May 17, 2007
It's painfully obvious that my
16-month-old daughter is better dressed than I am. Kids' clothes are
hard to compete with these days. Even their T-shirts are cooler than
ours. We found three drool-worthy toddler tees, each with a fun,
homemade feel, each created by companies started by design-savvy moms:
SUN T-SHIRT Ashor's Room, $42, Stinky Pants, 844 W. Armitage Ave.;
773-281-4002, www.stinky-pants.com. Chicagoan Nichole Rairigh started
this clothing line (named after her daughter Ashor) to create
sophisticated clothes for kids. Many Ashor's Room pieces have a
handmade feel, like this deconstructed, deep-purple T-shirt made of the
thinnest, softest cotton. We loved the well-crafted details -- funky
inside-out seams and stitching that looks like it was done on your
grandmother's sewing machine. SUPERWOMAN T-SHIRT.

"Babies With Attitude"
"A
similar ironic vinatge vein was to be found...in t-shirts by local brand BoBo
Brooklyn featuring sewn-on designs from vintage fabrics. Popular ones include
kids characters such as Snoopy and ET as well as less obviously baby oriented
images like "Star Wars" and "The Dukes of Hazzard" "I think the vintage look
really appeals to moms and dad' a saleswoman told me. 'they see 'Star Wars'
stuff and it looks like their 'Star Wars' stuff--the styles they grew up with."

"Summer's Perfect Accesory"
"Every
aspiring superhero needs a few key things: sidekick, cool name and most
important a great costume. Enter Jennifer Bounds of BoBoBrooklyn, who's been
cloaking crusaders ever since she witnessed some neighborhood kids struggling to
make capes out of towels. With a motherly attention to detail, she's lined her
bright satin capes in a natural sherpa that's perfect for beach or bath. After
vanquishing the day's monsters kids can wrap the cape around themselves to keep
warm...."

DESIGNER: Jennifer Bounds
Sizes: 3 months-12 years;
You could say Bounds' Bobo Brooklyn T-shirts
are the apparel equivalent of comfort food: each top is appliquéd with the Super
Heroes of yore - Batman, ET, Mr. T, Aquaman - and a host of other
favorites.
Outstanding Pieces: "I pity the fool" who passes on
this collection - all the tees are great.

The
rock t-shirt has become a little overexposed, and yet parents are still looking
for fun clothes that make them nostalgic. Jennifer Bounds of BoBoBrooklyn has
found the perfect solution. She stitches individual images from iconic bed
sheets such as Charlie Brown, Star Wars, E.T. and Mr. T, on to
t-shirts, creating the perfect vintage piece for any kid (sizes range from three
months to 12 years old). And it’s not just the t-shirts that we love; the
superhero beach capes are the perfect solution for any kid who likes to run
around pretending he/she can save the universe. Part towel, part cape (made from
Thai satin and natural Sherpa from the Carolinas), they’re perfect for after
bath and beach fun.
|
|
Many
children have channeled their comic-book alter egos by throwing a towel around
their shoulders after bath time. Now, Jennifer Bounds's line of Superhero Bath
Capes will add some extra incentive to getting in—and out—of the tub. These
vibrant, machine-washable Thai satin capes, lined in water-absorbent sheep's
wool, are perfect for warming up after a bath (not to mention leaping tall
buildings in a single bound). Aspiring do-gooders can choose between a star and
a lightning-bolt design.
